For many, country music has a reputation for being simple and even a bit silly. From songs about tractors and pickup trucks to lyrics about rednecks and hillbillies, one could say that the genre has “embraced its lighthearted side.” These playful songs often make us laugh and tap our feet, reminding us not to take life too seriously. Easily misunderstood, many people never explore the musical depths that some country musicians are capable of or the occasional ingenious song by mainstream country artists.
Depths are ignored because the genre, as a whole, is shadowed by an unfortunate reputation. Folk music is a similar genre gaining popularity because it distances itself from the mainstream country sound. Folk music often has more talented musicians and insightful lyrics. Still, there is country music that transcends the chains of its dwindling reputation, and that is deserving of your interest.
One prime example of the silly side of country music is the hit song “Red Solo Cup” by the late Toby Keith. This catchy tune is an ode to the ubiquitous party accessory and celebrates the joy of simple pleasures. While some may dismiss it as a novelty song, it's undeniably fun and has become a staple at tailgate parties and backyard barbecues.

Garth Brooks was my first favorite musician, in the mid-90s, he helped to open my eyes to a depth of country music that existed as a pocket sometimes isolated from the mainstream sound and limited interest for musicians and songs that are genuinely artistic.
